This year's citywide Homeless Education Symposium, Motivating Children of Color, climaxed the twentieth-anniversary of the Homeless Education Resource Network, formerly known as the Homeless Student Initiative. In past years, we engaged many community leaders, shelter providers, and parents in workshops and programs across Boston on the status of family homelessness and youth education. It is from these events that the themes of this symposium emerged. Motivating Children of Color echoes the collective aspirations of people who participated in and attended our events.

The 2011 symposium brought together directors of homeless shelters, school personnel, and other community service providers from Boston to address organizational practices affecting children of color at the local and state levels.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Carroll Blake, Executive Director of the Boston Schools Achievement Gap

Dr. Blake is well respected as an educator that has successfully worked with boys of color. He is often called upon as a consultant to train organizations in the areas of cultural competency and cultural sensitivity. Dr. Blake will share his expertise on how to best motivate children of color in Boston for education success. Our goal is to help disseminate knowledge, define new practices, and strategize on how to advance the dream of progress and prosperity among our students of color. HERN will be honored to have your participation in the 2010 CITYWIDE Homeless Education Symposium.
